Pedra do Telegrafo: An epic hike in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Pedra do Telegrafo

An Epic hike in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

While planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro, I knew I wanted to hike Pedra do Telegrafo. After seeing what appeared to be death defying photos of people hanging off a cliff on Instagram and Facebook, I knew I wanted that experience. What I didn't know was that reaching the rock wasn't as straightforward as I assumed. Hopefully these tips will guide you on this epic journey.

What you need to know before you go

Start out early because the rock is about a 90 minute drive from the Copacabana area. The best way to get there is by bus then walk but you can also hire a Uber or private driver to get there quicker. Bring a backpack with lots of water, hat, sunscreen, snacks, and swimwear. The base of the hill is located at Guaratiba Beach, a nice little area to hang out before or after your climb. Once you begin your climb, it's a 45min-1hr moderate hike one way. During your hike, you will pass through several viewpoints while coursing it's 2.1 mile climb to the top. The best time to visit the rock is early morning during the weekdays to avoid crowds.

How to get to Pedra do Telegrafo

I highly recommend starting your day early for this moderate hike to avoid long lines for photos once you reach the top. We barely made sunset but we made it in time for some amazing views and shots.

There are three ways you can there;Uber, bus, or take a tour. For adventure and exploration purposes we opt to catch the bus but if you want to arrive sooner I would recommend an Uber.

From Rio de Janeiro you will need to get to Terminal Alvorada (30mins). This is a central terminal and there are plenty of buses to take you there from neighborhoods like Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Barra da Tijuca and Lapa. When you get to Terminal Alvorada, go down the escalator and make a right toward the escalators near Bob's Burger. Go up the escalator and toward the right and take one of the blue express buses to Malto Alto station (30mins). Once you arrive at Malto Alto station you’ll need to take the local bus 867 towards Barra de Guaratiba (30mins). Get off the bus at the Barra de Guaratiba stop and walk towards the yellow church. There are a set of stairs besides the church leading to an alleyway. If you’re unsure if you ask any local you see they will be able to point you in the right direction. The alleyway is where the hike to Pedra do Telegrafo starts.

You will soon see yellow painted footprints on the ground which will guide you to the top of Pedra do Telegrafo. The walk starts off in a residential neighborhood and then you’ll make your way into the forest area up the hill.

Keep in mind the hills are steep, even before you get onto the track.
There were a couple of nice viewpoints for photos and to take a break.

Once you reach the top of the hill, there will most likely be a line but be patient and you will get an opportunity to take some pretty epic shots.

If interested, there's a local guy who take professional pictures and charges $5 for 10 photos. We just barely made sunset but it was definitely worth the adventure!
